Speaking of barber shops, does anyone remember a shop on Union Ave,right next to what was Mayer's gas station. I believe it was owned and operated by Frank Gentile. I went there for quite a while when I got older. Like Tommy Plick's place, Frank had is own cast of characters. Most of them were older than Plick's but none the less funny or informed on BB happenings. You got a haircut and entertained for about 8 to 10 bucks back then.
I used to get my hair cut there. As a kid my Dad would always take me to our cousin, Tony Dela Cave (spelling?). He had a barber shop up on top of the mountian in Watchung. We would go up Thompson Ave, then on to Chimmney Rock Road pass the quary and White Rock then at top of mountian make a left and it was on the left about 1/2 mile down..

Franky Gent's was my high school place, you could stop and get a haircut, go next door for a frozen coke, and head down the park for a pick-up basketball game.
Does anyone remember the little barber shop next to the old Food Fair where Efinger's is now. I think it was run by Mr. Gentile but can't quite remember. I had my first crew cut there and still remember the smell of that stuff he rubbed on to make the hair stick up. There you could get a cut, go next door for a pack of baseball cards at the Park Luncheonette, and head down the park for a pick-up basketball game.

Life was good!
That stuff in a jar, did it look like Pink colored Vaseline? If I remember correctly the stuff was even thicker then Vaseline but it made your hair stand up real nice. It had a peculiar scent to it but smelled pretty good at the time. Have the name on the tip of my tongue but it won't come out.

That's the stuff, some kind of pomade with a pretty distinctive men's barber shop smell. They say scent produces stronger memories than visual or auditory and it is definitely true for barber shops.
