Ok I am trying to remember a food product I remember having in our home in Bound Brook back in the day. I would say going back to the 60's at least. Let me explain. Since St.Patricks day my wife has been bringing home a Soda Bread she has picked up at the ShopRite. Well everytime I sink my teeth into this bread filled with raisins it reminds me of this flat cookie I remember eating as a kid that my parents bought for me. I use to really like it as it was flat and filled with raisins. My guess is maybe it was a soda cracker or cookie of some kind but I can't for the life of me remember what the products name was. I remember it being kind of chewy but the taste was really good. Somewhat tasted like the Soda Bread I just mentioned about above. Does anyone remember this item? I sure hope so. Actually I am counting on someone here to tell me what it is. Forum member Dixie Dude"s wife remembers it as I mentioned it to her recently over the phone but can't remember the maker of it.

Stone, is the raisin biscuit type cookie I sent you on my previous post what you were remembering? By your description, this is what I remember and really liked as a kid
I think Sunshine and Nabisco also made them back then Hope it is what you are looking for

Zach, You are the man!! This is exactly the item I am looking for. The picture showed me right away that this is the item. I use to love those cookie's or what ever you call them. Now where do I find something similiar? Has anyone run into these type of soda biscuit or soda cookies? I walked up and down the cookie isle at the BB ShopRite and didn't see anything that even came close. I must of walked back and forth 4 times about a month ago looking for this product.
Funny, is this an Italian type of cookie? Being Crawfords calls it a Garabaldi Biscuit. Wouldn't surprise me growing up in an Italian family that this item was in our home. I guess the same goes for you Zach and most others that grew up in the West End.
I just knew someone on this forum would come through for me here. Glad I didn't give up.

Found more info on the Garabaldi Biscuits this morning on a website I would like to share with others here. Apparently I am not the only one who has been looking for this product once manufactured here by the Sunshine Biscuit Company.
Crawfords Garibaldi Biscuits,. The Garibaldi biscuit consists of currants in a plain biscuit, best enjoyed with tea or coffee.
One biscuit is just 40 calories (but I can eat the whole packet with 1 cup of tea - Editor)
This biscuit is named after Giuseppe Garibaldi, an Italian general and leader in the fight to unify Italy. It was first manufactured by Peak Freans in 1861 after Garibaldi visited England.
I found these at the vermont country store online. Ordered some for my dad, now order for myself.

The perfect (and apparently the only) replacement for he old Sunshine raisin biscuits. They are simple, they taste right, and they store well. A lightweight, non-sticky snack substitute for a granola bar.

Grew up on them, absolutely fantastic. Can’t find anywhere in the US. So disappointing.

I enjoyed the biscuits but it was a bit dry and wish they gave more in the package.

Reminds me of Sunshine’s Raisin Bars (out of production). Love them!

Stone, glad I could help. I'm going to look around and see if I can find these in the stores out where we live. I use to eat these growing up but forgot about them. When you mentioned them in your post, I immediately remembered them and actually could taste them. I'll let you know if I find them
I know what your refering to they were called Sunshine Golden Fruit Raisin bars. I used to get them all the time loved them. Sunshine was bougth out by Keebler and then discontinued them.

Go on to the Vermont Country Store website. you can but them there but they are expensive but from what I've read, they are pretty close to what we remember
I couldn't wait as I placed an order this morning with the Vermont Country store online. A little expensive with shipping but I had to have them. They carry the Garabaldi Biscuit from Crawfords imported from England.
In the mean time Zach keep an eye out for them or something similiar in your area.
GTO/GN just a couple of minutes ago I called Keebler and voiced my opinion of the product once produced by Sunshine. They told me they had the product until 1997 when it was discontinued. She said she could make no promises but would put in my request for the company to remake the product. If anyone else wants to call them so it shows others are also interested here is the phone number.

Zach I will definitely let you know on this forum. Actually the price wasn't too bad at $3.15 a package especially since they can't be found anywhere else. I did find another source on the net that has the same at around $2.65 or so a package. I purchased 6 packages below from the Vermont Country Store for starters. The way I looked at it is I wasted more then $24.85 on other things over the years. Life is short. Got to have my Garibaldi Biscuits once again or whatever you may want to call them.

That's not too bad considering you didn't have to pay sales tax either. Bon Appetite
Dixie we don't have sales tax over here in N.J. on food purchased in a Supermarket. We do have sales tax on food purchased in a Restaurant though. Items like Soda are taxed in a Supermarket. I don't think biscuits or cookies but I could be wrong. Bread isn't taxed. I don't spend much time in the Supermarket anymore. The wife does all that shopping now although I did it for years quite awhile back. When I hear about some of the prices anymore I have a hard time believing it.

Hey guys, Don't know if this recipe is any good, but its worth a try. I'll have to get the wife to make it and hopefully we won't have to worry about satisfing our cravings for it any more.

Baduce, In my search of the product I came across a few recipes for the Garibaldi Biscuits also after Zach came through for me here on the forum. I couldn't wait to order them when Zach found that the company Crawford made and sold the product. Trying out one of the recipes would of been the next step if I couldn't find them I would have to say. Who knows I may give it a go anyway at some point and see if we can duplicate the process if it doesn't become available locally again down the road. First of all I will have to see how close the Crawford Biscuit is to the one I remember by either Sunshine or Nabisco back in the day.
Let us know if your wife gives one of the recipes a try. I am sure you know exactly what the product is suppose to taste like if you ate them as a kid like most of us did on this forum at one time.

Stone, let me know if they were worth the price when you get and taste them. In the meantime, I will keep looking in my area.
Zach, I told you I would let you know when I received the Garibaldi Biscuits. Well I received them on Tuesday afternoon as my wife told me that I received a package from The Vermont Country store. Walking into our foyer I looked down and saw this very small box. At first I could not believe my eyes. Well I opened the box. 6 small packages for what $24.85 which included shipping. Well let me tell you the product tasted good but the package is maybe a little bigger then a package you would get in a vending machine. If I had to buy this item in a store I would say it shouldn't sell for more then $1.50-$1.79 at todays prices. Will I order it again? Probably not but I got to taste these cookies that I haven't tasted since the early 60's. One thing I must add. I feel Nebisco and the Sunshine Bakery over here in the states put out a better product. That soda bread taste as I mentioned in the beginning of this thread was missing from this product. The rest of the product looks to be the same with the crushed rasins and flat cookie or biscuit. They are good though and reminded me of the old days. To rate the product to compare to the Nebisco or Sunshine product if they were a (10) I would rate this product as a (7 or 8).
On another note once this product is gone which should be in no time flat I may consider going the route Baduce1 suggested. I am hoping he convinced his wife to get right on the recipe he gave us a link to on this forum. Maybe he will surprise us and tell us she succeeded in re-producing what we remember best from back in the day.

It's good to hear that you were able to re-live and re-taste a part of the Good Old Days, albeit an expensive re-live and taste. Let's all cross our fingers and hope that Baduce 1's wife comes through!
We gave it a try ourselves early today in trying to duplicate the Garabaldi Biscuit that we all remember but I am sorry to report that we failed to even come close. We went with a different recipe for the Biscuit but after coming back to this forum today and looking at the one Baduce1 gave a link to it is basically the same recipe.
Ours said to bake for 15 minutes. Well at around half of that time to me not being a baker they looked like they were burning and they did burn pretty well at 15 minutes at 400 degrees. Doing it again I would put the heat down and maybe bake for 10 minutes. Nonetheless the taste wasn't there in some unburned areas of the biscuit. As I said not even close to even the Crawfords Garibaldi cookies I just purchased from the Vermont Country Store at a premium for the little bit of product they sent out to us. Hoping Baduce1 has better results when they get around to it.

Just an update to this thread on the Garibaldi Biscuits. I found another company carrying the Crawfords Garibaldi Biscuits. A much better price then was given me by the Vermont Country Store. The company is called the English Tea Store. They are online at http://www.englishteastore.com/ . I already have a new order in place of which I am sharing it with Zach and Dixie Dude. We purchased enough of the product to gain free shipping on top of the cheaper price offered.

Zach and Dixie Dude the Garabaldi Biscuits are in as UPS just delivered them this afternoon. Sending out PM's to both of you although Dixie is on his way out to Las Vegas as I write this post.

I have to report that we or should I say I went through a case of these Garabaldi Biscuits already. The packages are even better then the last that I got from the Vermont Country Store as they taste like they were just baked. Zach and Dixie I am not too far away from placing another order for them. Don't know when Dixie will be out this way again to pick his up but don't worry I won't let them go to waste. I can always reorder more. The wife says I am going crazy over them since I haven't had them since the late 50's or early 60's. Makes me wonder!

Today I got to see Dixie Dude for breakfast at the Middlesex Texas Weiner as he came down from Virginia during the weekend for a wake of a good friend of ours. He also picked up his case of Garabaldi Biscuits that I ordered along with mine for both Dixie Dude and Zach. Zach never came to pickup his 2 cases and apparently left the forum over these biscuits for those wondering what happened to him. You see I contacted Zach when they came in as Zach made a committment to me that he wanted me to order 2 cases for him. I PM'd Zach on 2 occasions over a 3 week span about not forgetting to pick them up but he never came to pick them up as he said he would. It was no big deal as I kept them for myself but now no more Zach on the forum. A few members here that I have spoken too who questioned where he was can't believe what happened especially it being over cookies. Dixie from what I understand tried to PM Zach but he never answered the PM. Zach was a good member here and I would like to see him back on the forum but no one seems to know what is going on with him. A third PM by me never was answered as I wanted him to know that I hated to put him on the spot about the biscuits and that if he didn't want them it was no big deal as I was almost finished with my supply at the time and would of ordered more anyway. Just goes to show you how little things can get to some people.
On another note it would be nice to hear from Baduce once again on this forum. I think Baduce might of felt like he was put on the spot in this very thread as he promised to have his wife do up the Garabaldi Biscuit recipe he submited here. Apparently she never found the time to do so and now Baduce doesn't come back to this forum either. Again little things will keep some people away that are really not a big deal. Heck I found a great source for the Garabaldi Biscuits as mentioned on this forum. If I want them I know just were to buy them as I have let others know on this forum thread also. Hopefully Zach and Baduce will reconsider and come back to the forum. At that point I will delete this post. In the mean time I gave Zach the Garabaldi Biscuit (Avatar) because it is the last thing I remember of him on this forum. If he comes back he can take the avatar off or just keep it. Its up to him. If he doesn't come back it will stay put to remind me of what happened over trying to do something good for someone.

Oh yea. I hooked up with Stone as he said at the Texas Weiner. I received my Garabaldi Bars like he promised. I brought them home and my wife has been eating them. She said they were just like she remembered. No one has heard from Zach in quite a while he sure did miss out on a real treat. Thanks for the Great Deal Stone. It was Great seeing you again. I will let you know when I need more Garabaldi Bars.
Hey Dixie. I hope Shirley is enjoying them. I already ran out of mine plus the 2 cases I purchased for Zach. I just placed another order early this morning. For any others out there looking for the product the best place to buy them is online from The English Tea Company. They definitely have the best price going out there. Those last 5 cases I purchase for Dixie, Zach and myself tasted like they were just baked. What a great product I have to say. Its too bad no one here in the States is making the product anymore because I think they would sell the heck out if this product. Maybe Crawford's ought to think about expanding here to the states to make their Garabaldi Biscuit available here. They would definitely have a market for them here for sure.
