Big Snow

I guess the weather patterns have changed over the years.  I can remember very large snowstorms that kept us in for days.  These occurred in the 60's and then less in the 70's.  Bound Brook would become a winter wonderland and after the snow had fallen, it was nice to walk the town whether it be Main St. or the pretty neighborhoods of Central Ave. and Church St. up to Peidmont.  The trees would be heavy with snow and roads were quiet from the insulation of the fresh snow.  It was very peaceful.  In the morning the borough snow plows would be active plowing and spreading salt.  It always amazed me that you would just get done shoveling out the driveway and the plow would come by and deposit about 5 feet of snow at the end for you to dig out again.  I remember one winter shoveling out the garage door so I could get the car out to go to work.  My grandmother had one of the locals come and plow the driveway.  He deposited all of the snow in front of the garage.  Right up to the roof!

Our street was one way and narrow.  One year Rolling Stone built the most awesome snow fort on the corner.  This thing was so large, it could have had it's own zip code.  It remained for at least a week or so.  Fun to play in!

In the 70's I do recall a big snow, probably the winter of 77-78. I could not get home from work in South Bound Brook and the police were nice enough to give me a ride.  They were the only ones on the road.  As I hear of snow in Bound Brook last nite, I just thought I would relate a few memories.  Meantime, here in Florida we are having unseasonably warm temps.  I am in a t-shirt and we will probably kick on the A/C in a few minutes.

I agree. I remember shoveling & plowing and chopping ice. I sure don't miss those days. Here in Virginia Beach we don't get much SNOW and if we do it doesn't last long. When I first moved here 10+ years ago the first time it Snowed I asked my neighbor when do the plows come through ? He laughed and said it will be gone tomorrow. They do plow the main roads and Inter States but not the neighborhoods.

joesdad,
That snow that we received the other day I would say maybe an inch and a half of it was more then enough for me already this year having to brush it off of some of my vehicles. I almost fell off of my deck last night do to it melting some and freezing. Not looking forward to much more snow I have to say here. A lite sprinkle of the stuff maybe an inch or so on Christmas Eve I wouldn't mine though.

Jay you have a great memory going back into the early 60's when you could not of been very old to remember the SNOW FORTS very well that where built on the corner of our 2 streets. I can't take all the credit for building them as I did have some help from some neighborhood kids. It was done quite a few times back then during a heavy snow storm. It reminds me.  I remember some pictures taken of the snow fort that I came across some years ago. If I ever find them I will surely post them here if they still exist over at my parents home. Man the snowball fights that took place back then. The fort was great to have, We even built a tunnel out of snow behind it to hide in.biggrin

Thinking of all the snow we use to get back then I remember Sled riding down the hill on the end of Talmadge Ave by the Dellecave's.  Plenty of fun there until I graduated to the higher slopes of Bill Goats Hill smile as I got a little older. Now Billy Goats Hill was the place to go to if you wanted to really go Sled Riding in Bound Brook. With enough momentum you could sleigh across 2nd street. Surprised no one ever got hit by a car doing so but then again there weren't many cars around town back then that I remember unlike today. Usually by the time I got up there 2nd street was plowed of all snow and you would stop dead with your sled at the bottom of the hill if you made it that far. I remember the baracades there also at the corner of Fairview Ave and 2nd street. For those not in the know Fairview Ave between High St. and 2nd St. was known as (BILLY GOATS HILL.)

Yes, I remember some of the snowstorms of the past. I remember waiting with anticipation to hear if school was closed. Unlike today, it really had to snow quite a bit to close school back then. If school was closed, I remember trying to get out of the house. Our front door was groundlevel and the snowdrifts would lay up against the door so you'd really have to push to get the door open. I also recall going out with my friends to shovel out sidewalks and driveways and if we were lucky, between all of us, we'd earn a couple of bucks by the end of the day.
Of course, who could ever forget Billy Goats Hill. What great times sliding down that hill all day and part of the night. Crashing and turning over the sled. Going down, one person on top of the other or one person behind the other and not hitting the crub or the other sleds.
Joesdad is right, as I got older, I enjoyed walking downtown. It was so great to walk to the supermarkets and stores because there were very few cars on the road and it was so quiet and peaceful. It felt wonderful to take that walk to and from and enjoy the snow and fresh air.
Thanks
