Mr. Assante Pizzeria - - - - Rt.22 Greenbrook

A bunch of us fellows from BB use to go up to Mr. Assante Pizzeria during the early 70's late at night with our Muscle Cars and Hot Rods to hang out and eat some really good Pizza back in the day. This is another place I haven't been too in awhile that I need to stop in to again. Joe Assante the original owner of the place is still there. I always felt that Mr. Assante's made one of the best pies around next to Chitches. Both pies are completely different to the way they are made as Chitches is a Pan Pizza verses how most Pizza places make them today by placing the whole Pizza directly into and on the hot surface of the oven whether it be brick or metal. I am a Pizza person so I like it either way. Problem is with most Pizzeria's out there some use a better made dough then others. Mr. Assante's has the taste of Italian bread in their dough. De Rosa's in Bound Brook was made this way also back in the day.  Most places you go to today the Pizza dough tastes like cardboard although the cheese and sauce is ok.  hmm I guess you need to be an Italian to know this or at least experienced great pizza before. biggrin

Hey Stone,

Try finding a half decent pizza in Florida....Good luck.  Far and few between.  Same with Italian Restuarants.  They are here but most are lacking.  Joe Assante bought one of my cars back in the day, around 78-79.  I would be curious to find out whatever happened to it.  It was only a year old and had about 12K miles on it.

I have the same problem here in Virginia. Pizza Hut, Dominoes PaPa John  NO REAL PIZZA or Italian food either. No good Bakeries or Bagels. They never heard of a buttered hard roll and regular coffee either. Nor Pork Roll egg & Cheese !!

Hey Joesdad,

Try Brunos in Tampa. I think they have 2 or 3 locations. For Florida, one of the better pies I've had. I think the one I had came from there place on Nebraka if I remember right.

Hey Stone,

Why do people eat that crap at Pizza Hut and Dominos up there when you still have some good pizza shops around? Go figure.

Baduce,
You got me? I can eat a Dominos or Pizza Hut pie with the works but you are right not even close to what a Pizza should be. Got to admit when I was down to Sarrasota, Florida 4 years ago a friend of mine took us to a (All You Can Eat) Pizza place where you paid if I remember correctly $5 per person. I have to say I enjoyed the pizza there although not a DeRosa's type of pie. What I liked about it is that they had so many choices of pie slices to pick from. I really enjoyed the Philly Steak pizza with white sauce (Alfreddo Sauce) with peppers, onions and mushrooms. That was a good pie, something I never had before and that was down in Florida.biggrin For a chaser they even had desert pie covered with apple, cherry etc. made almost like a regular fruit pie but only on a pizza slice. Something definitely different from what we see up here in N.J. I have to say you Florida people don't have it so bad after all. I think I could survive there.

I got to speak to the owner of the Pizza place who told me he was originally from North Jersey and moved down to Florida 20 years before. If I ever get back down to Sarrasota to Siesta Key I will definitely stop in that Pizza Shop once again. Thats a guarantee.
