Again you have to go pretty far back to remember the Bound Brook Poultry Shop. I use to walk past it everyday going to and from school. I would also stop in every so often to look around at the Chickens,Turkeys,Ducks, Rabbits and Pigeons that were all caged up inside the place. This is where most of the meat of this type came from that I remember from back in the 50's. Just walking around inside you would see people coming in and picking out what they wanted as Charlie (The Chicken Man) as we called him but not to his face would grab the live animal, wrap its feet and place it on the scale hanging from the ceiling in the middle of the store. Without going into detail you know what was going to happen next. I know I watched the whole procedure from beginning to end on numerious occasions. For those who know Bucky Jannone from town he worked there as a teenager I remember.
I don't think a place like the Bound Brook Poultry Shop could exist today with groups out there like PETA who would probably make it impossible. As all know today you just go to any Supermarket and all the dirty work has been done to where all the meat just sits out for you to pick in refrigerated holding areas of the store. I have to say it was one heck of an experience I encountered as a kid.

No it was on the corner of Drake and Main St. The same building that Rick Soderberg took over for his Motorcycle Shop before he built his new building across the street. I am going to show the street listing in the heading of this thread now. I should of did this before for those not in the know.

Dixie, Brook Chevrolet was before my time. Being you are not telling us here where it was located maybe you should make a new thread listing it. If it was across the street from the poultry shop on Main Street it would of had to be where Herbie LeMans old body shop was located. I knew Herbie well and spent a lot of time down at that shop. I never remember him or anyone else mentioning anything about it as far back as the late 60's anyway. Is this where Brook Chevrolet was? To the right was Natalizio's. Was it there?

Stone, I am 99% sure it was next to Natalizio but I was only a kid when my Dad bought his 1952 Chevy there. Ask your dad he would remember or one of your cousins.
I remember that a day or two before Thanksgiving every year, I would go there with my Grandmother to pick out Turkey dinner. I kind of remember that there was a room that we'd go in and it would be flooded with turkeys running around, screaming and bumping into everything. My Grandmother would look around and then pick one that looked good to her and he would be our dinner
Can't forget the Poultry store. Dennis Dellecave and I would go there as an activity when we were kids. What else was there to do??? Of course we would gawk at the chickens and yes, the procedure went as you described. Place had a very unique smell to it as well that even remained when Rick's Cycle center occupied the building!!
