That is a place that I miss in Bound Brook. I got to know Ken the owner a resident of Middlesex back during the 70's pretty well before he knocked down the old building and built the new one that houses Joey's in the back of the property.

I used to operate the Sunoco Station next to Dairy Queen and had the "Wash & Chat Laundrimat" on the other. I love Banana Splits to this dat.

I just want to clear up some misguided info be given about the Old Dairy Queen spoken about on the 08805 forum. No one over there seems to have it right as to where the old Dairy Queen once stood before it was rebuilt sometime during the 70's. Being I grew up in town back in the day like plenty on this particular forum I am sure most will agree with me here as I even mentioned about it on this forum when this thread appeared a year ago.
The old Dairy Queen sat in the same lot as the new Dairy Queen sat but it sat toward the front of the lot very close to Union Ave at the corner of Union Ave and Tea Street. You could actully drive around the place. You could pull in from Union or Tea, park in the back or side or front if you wanted. I had an unpleasant experience back in the day I would say around 1970 early '71 as I was backed in a parking spot that butted up to Scotty's Sunoco with my three year old 1967 Corvette Stingray when some jerk comes around the Old Dairy Queen and decides to back into the spot right next to me. Problem is the person can't drive and backs right into my Corvette smashing the fiberglass nose of the car. I have to tell you I was one sick person at that point. I gave the guy hell and found out later that he was a big wig at Research Cottrell where I was working at the time. Nothing was ever said and all I got was a sorry from the jerk. Trust me I remember exactly where the Old Dairy Queen once stood.

You're absolutely correct. That's exactly where the DQ stood at the time and how the parking lot was laid out. Funny, one afternoon my girlfriend and I were racing to see who could get to the DQ first. She took the Talmadge Ave. to Tea St route and I took Vosseler to Union Ave route. I get to the DQ and who follows me in but a BB Cop. Boy, I can't remember who the cop was but he turned out to be ok. Because the parking lot was full and everyone was looking, he said that he had to at make it seem as though he was giving me a ticket. So he wrote me a warning, "DO NOT SPEED, IF I EVER STOP YOU AGAIN I WILL GIVE YOU A TICKET, on a blank piece of paper that he had in the car. He put the warning in his ticket book before he got out of his car and made like he ripped it out of the book when he gave it to me so everyone that was looking thought he gave me a ticket.
BTW, I worked at Research-Cottrell from '80 to '87, were you there then?
Yep that layout now is somewhat the same with the two entrance/exits....I think it just looks like they raised up the ground level there now... Gives it a different look and remember back then Union was only 2 lanes back then too i believe

Gia, Sort of like the 2nd picture you posted. The first picture of the little dinky Dairy Queen reminds me of (The Dugout) ice cream place a former Dairy Queen if I remember correctly in Finderne (Bridgewater). It was located on the corner right across the street from Bucky's and across from the Burger King even before the Burger King came into existence to those that remember.
Zach, I left Research around the Summer of '71. I started there in the Summer of '69 working in Inventory Control. I was too young and they weren't paying me enough money at the time to be sitting all day long working Kardex (inventory card files). This was before computers remember.

My Dad worked at Research-Cottrell from 1945 to 1977. He had 8 weeks vacation when he retired from there..

You are right on where the DQ was located..also correct that it was a main stop after little league games..Go Truckers!!! That was the team I was on..lol
I played for the Elks and after every game and every practice our coach, Mr Spezney (spelling) would take us to the DQ for Blizzards! Those were the days
Lions here under Lefty Sperduto. We hit the refreshment stand for a ice cold Lasko soda instead on most game nights. Spent more time at the Dairy Queen after I started driving on my own. As a kid living in the West End Danseks was the place to go for Ice Cream just as Chitch's or De Rosa's was the place to go for pizza.

Wasn't Pete Imbriani also a coach for the Lions? You're about Dansek's for ice cream. They sold Hersey's ice cream which I thought was great. Later they started to make Italian Ice and had the best lemon ice.
Boy, DQ and Dansek's for ice cream, Chitch's for pizza, Esposito's Bakery for fresh baked Italian bread, Eddie the Butcher for fresh meat, the Brass Rail for great sandwiches and my Grandmother's cooking when I got home, it's no wonder I'm fat!
Wow.. You remembered my Dad.. and now that you mention it I remember him telling me he worked with you. He passed away in 1986 another victim of John's Manville..

Zach, You did get mixed up here in this thread. You mentioned about Pete. I do remember Pete but I don't remember him coaching the Tri-Boro Lions at the time I was on the team. Sal as I remember (forum member GTO/GN's) dad while I worked for Research back in the Day.
GTO/GN, I would bet even today if someone put your fathers picture in with 5 other people I could point him out without a problem. Sure I remember him. I use to see him just about everyday for the couple of years I worked at that company although many many years ago.

Stone, as usual, I was wrong. Now that I thought about it, Pete coached the Lasko team, not the Lions. Do you remember a coach named DiLeo on the Lions? His Son, Bobby was a singer back then and sang at a number of local venues.

During my little league time Mr Melnicki was our coach..he was a BB policeman so we had a few of the cops sons on our team. There sure were some characters around then..anyone remember the umpire called"chubby"..at least that is what i remember ..no idea what his real name was..Mr. Zucorski and Mr. Gabreaski ran the league..
Remember the goofy parade we used to have to start the season..as I recall it ended at the LL field and then each team played a two inning game..

Som44, I remember officer Melnicki from many years ago living in BB. The umpire Chubby that you speak about was Chubby Miranda a very good friend of my father and supposely one of the best football players Bound Brook ever had. He passed away just a few years ago. He was a piece of work in his old age I have to tell you. Had me shaking my head plenty of times with some of the things he would do or say.

heck he was a piece of work as an umpire..I can remember him telling me when to swing..we did not appreciate guys like him who gave of his time so we could have fun.. there were quite a few guys like him..mousy imbreani (sp), judge chavli, kurt? from the train station news stand..digadi (no idea what his name was) but he used to pinch my checks all the time down around Chitch's, jimmy the butcher (Bruno), Uncle Frankie (Capano)..great old men with stories that would have you laughing for hours

The umpire you're referring to was Chubby Moranda. Nice man, umpired many of my Little League and Pony League games.
Mr Zujowski and Mr Gabreowski ran the league.
Yeah, the parade was goofy but the parade symboliclly started the summer season and the "Games of Summer" Some of my best childhood memories were lived on the Little League field on Tea Street, the old field. If anyone out there knows anything about Bound Brook baseball then the player names of Korab, Irakowski, Welej, Patullo, Cocco, Beatty, the Fox brothers, Budnick, Spice, Bartsh, Magulock, Warner, the Walsh brothers, Dacknowski, Ballent, Premalacko, Brakowski and Corroccia and coaches Spezney, Patullo, Ballent, Imbriani, Dileo, Zujkowski, Cocco and Dacknowski, means something to you. My spelling isn't great and I know I've forgotten someone but these were all great coaches and players as Little Leaguers and most of the players went on to become outstanding high school and college players. Please excuse me but I get very emotional and passionate about this subject and I know that if we had been in the Little League World Series back then, we would have brought the championship to Bound Brook. Those guys were a bit older then me but I can remember watching them..the fox boys were our paperboys..played many a basketball game a their house..they used to let us just turn the light on and play on the driveway..everyone in the neighborhood new where the light switch was...I saw Chuck Fox last summer..he is still good friends with my brother-in-law Leigh Kirby and in fact married one of my sisters best friends..he still looked in pretty good shape...I also remember my first at bat in Pony league against Richie Korab...think I look at three pitches and sat down..lol..
Sometimes things just make you shake your head..took a quick look at the other BB site (not as much fun) and saw that Chubby is being inducted into the BBHS Hall of Fame..had not thought of him in years and now...
Chuck was one of my best friends in HS. He married a girl named Maureen. Last I heard, he was running a movie theater, among other things, in Upstate NY. His Mom and Dad were terrific, terrific people and I'll remember Harold and Eleanor forever. I graduated with Chuck's brother Brad. Hopefully, I'll see him next Spring at our 45th class reunion.
