The Egg Man,The Milk Man, The Rag and Mop Man, The Bread Man, Fuller Brush Man, The Vegetable Truck,

I would guess only the old timers will remember these wares being sold house to house in Bound Brook back in the day. How many of you remember the Horse Drawn Fruit & Vegetable Carts coming up and down the streets? They had the best Watermelons around. Remember when they stuck a knive in the Watermelon to cut a cube out to prove their Watermelons were the best around?

I remember the Eggman coming to our house every Thursday night. His name was Otto. I remember Ryans Dairy delivering to our house on a Saturday morning to drop our milk off. He came a couple of times a week. Bread was delivered by Bonaduce bakery early in the morning. I remember waking up to fresh Italian bread on a Saturday morning. Italian Toast! nod.gif Think about it.Is there anything better?

Remember Domanski Dairy across the tracks. In Bound Brook Heights (Now Piscataway) we had Bordens Dairy. Hassentueful Dairy Truck. "Hassie" used to let us ride the truck and on a HOT DAY would give you a piece of ice to lick on to keep cool. Also Jewel Tea Co. Homeade Bakery out of New Brunswick used to stop at the house and you could buy Pastries & Donuts and Fresh Bread. Percy Ratat sold ANYTHING from Mops & Brooms to Ringer Washing machines to Jewelery. We had a MILK BOX by the back door and you left a note if you wanted eggs or Cheese. Then came the Milk vending machine !! in front of the Firehouse. Oh and don't forget The Stanley Man.

Dixie,
Funny you bring up the first Milk Vending machines. That got me thinking because the first Milk Vending Machine that I remember being put into use in Bound Brook was located right in between Cal's Esso Station and a Used Car Lot to the left of Cal's right next door. Pranzatelli's sits now where that used car lot once was. Does anyone remember the used car lot I am talking about? The ground it sat on was raised up in that area making the car lot sit somewhat up on a hill. smile
I even remember the white stone on the ground there that the used cars were parked on.

I remember the bread delivery on Saturdays.  I also remember the milk box at our back door and also the Fuller Brush man!  I also remember buying 8-track tapes and albums from Pranzatelli's.  I would ride my bike downtown and spend my hard earned cash on an 8-track!  Geeeeez, now I feel old?  when my kids were younger, they asked me what records were?  Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!  jawdrop.gif

Minty,
I use to buy the latest 45's down at Pranzatelli's during the mid 60's. If I remember correctly they were around 79 cents each.

How about around the end of september the grapeman would deliver to the homes who made there homemade wine....My grandfather was one of them.....and on garbarge day you knew who were the wine makers by all the empty grape crates left out on the curb

Gia,
My grandfather made his home made wine down in the cellar also. I remember the big wooden barrel he would squease the grapes in. He also made his own wine vinegar. That wine smell stayed in the basement all year. I remember all the grape crates around also. I use to like to drink the fresh squeased grape juice and eat those grapes but never acquired the taste even to this day for the bitter Italian grape wine I hate to have to admit. My grandfather use to have a glass at every meal with a few cherry peppers to go along with it. He would even cut up fresh peaches from the yard and have the wine poured over them in a glass.  Man what memories.

RE: The Egg Man,The Milk Man, ROMEO, and More!

Oh boy, that brought back some memories.  The egg man came in the night as we slept, his name was Leo.  I never saw the man, ever.  He actually was my Aunt's egg man.  She lived upstairs from us.  I would hear him in the summer when I would be up watching TV in the wee hours.  I think he delivers about 1:30 or 2a.m.  My dog knew when he came as I could hear a dull growl when he went up the front porch stairs!

The rag man was very very scary and I would not leave the stoop when he came through.  I am not that terribly old but I remember this guy coming down Linden Ave. with a horse and cart calling out "raaaaaaaaaaaags".

Fuller brush man was a regular on the street too. Does anyone remember Romeo.  He had a green Ford van from the early sixties.  He sold door to door, pillows, bedding, sheets etc. came around for years!

Milk man?  Barely remember him but I think his name was Ed Ryan.  Grandma would always buy me a quart of chocolate milk upon request.

Later, came the guys from Jersey City.  They would come in a van with hanging provolones, breads from NY the size of tires etc.  They had all the good italian stuff!  Later they moved to Bound Brook and opened Fiore's Market on Talmage Ave.  I became good buddies with both the D'allesandro boys latet on and we still are friends to this day.

RE: The Egg Man,The Milk Man, The Rag and Mop Man, The Bread Man, Fuller Brush Man, The Vegetable Truck,

My grandfather had grape vines in his yard and made wine as well.  I remember the wine cellar where he would store crates and then every Christmas, he would bring out the bottle and serve all my aunts and uncles.  I never got any tho.  My grandfather was so proud of his grape vines.  I remember one time, friends from down the street came over and we had a "grape fight" with the green grapes that weren't ripe yet.  Wow, did I get in trouble.  Not to mention the fact that I wasn't allowed to hang with those kids anymore.  They were the Howell kids that lived in Washington Street.  Anyone remember them?  There were like the only British kids in Bound Brook back in the day!
