Philip Anthony Fiadino, active in community

BOUND BROOK -- Philip Anthony Fiadino, 90, died Friday (Aug. 31, 2007) at Somerset Medical Center, Somerville. Born Dec. 11, 1916, in Bound Brook, he was the son of Anthony and Mary Carnivale Fiadino. He was a lifelong Bound Brook resident.

Mr. Fiadino was a graduate of Bound Brook High School and attended Rutgers University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater of Operations with the 9th Infantry Division. He fought in the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Central Europe, Normandy (D-Day), Northern France and Rhineland campaigns. For his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service, the Good Conduct Medal, the Europe-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and received the Certificate of Honor from the 50th Anniversary Medal of Disembarkation of Normandy and Provence and the Liberation of France. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post No. 225.

Mr. Fiadino worked most of his life at Public Service Electric & Gas Co., in Bound Brook and Elizabeth. He retired in 1981 as accounting department supervisor.

Mr. Fiadino was very active in Bound Brook community affairs. He was a member of the Bound Brook Borough Council, where he served as chairman of the Finance Committee, commissioner of the Police Committee, commissioner of the Fire Committee and Fire Prevention Bureau, and council liaison to the Board of Education and Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Bound Brook Board of Education, where he served as Finance Committee chairperson, and the Building and Grounds Committee chairperson. He was a member of the Bound Brook Shade Tree Commission.

Mr. Fiadino was a volunteer fireman with the Bound Brook Fire Department. He was a member of America Hose and Engine Co. No. 2, where he served as secretary. He was also secretary for the Bound Brook Fireman's Relief Association. He was a member of the Bound Brook Exempt Fireman's Association. He served as secretary and was a member of the Executive Committee of the New Jersey State Fireman's Association. He was chairperson of the Fireman's March on Muscular Dystrophy, Bound Brook and Somerset County.

Mr. Fiadino was a past president of the John F. Kennedy Democratic Club of Bound Brook. He was a life member of Bound Brook Lodge No. 1388, B.P.O. Elks, and a member of the Monte Carmelo Society, Bound Brook. He was a Cub Scout master of Pack No. 47, Bound Brook, and was a member of the Boy Scout Committee, Troop No. 47, B.S.A., Bound Brook.

He was a very active member and communicant of St. Joseph Church Catholic Community, Bound Brook, where he was a past president of the St. Joseph Holy Name Society; an usher; parish representative to the Trenton Diocesan Council; a member of the St. Joseph Parish Council; co-chairperson of the Fiesta Committee; president of St. Joseph's Catholic Youth Organization, and social chairperson of the Somerset County CYO Adult Committee. When the Celebration of the Eucharist was introduced in English after the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, he was the first parish lay reader of scripture.

Mr. Fiadino was predeceased by his parents; his son, Dennis L. Fiadino; his brothers, Michael and Nicholas Fiadino; his sisters, Theresa Fiadino, Antoinette Ruscetta; brother-in-law, Gary Ruscetta; nephews, Anthony and Nicholas Fiadino and Carmen Ruscetta; his parents-in-law, Frank and Maria Dannucci Dietro; his brother-in-law, Joseph Dietro; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Peter and Mary Dietro, Patsy and Mary Dietro, Rose and Samuel Armenti, Florence and Nicholas Ezzo, Elizabeth and Ladd Florio, Anna and John Bambo, Jennie and Frank Granato, Josephine and William Pozsonyi, Anthony and Carmella Cassano; his nephews, Ronald and Robert Armenti; and his great-nephew, Ronald Armenti.

He is survived by his wife, Stella Dietro Fiadino; his son, Philip M. Fiadino of Newport, R.I.; his sister, Jennie Kostecki of Bound Brook; 18 nephews, 33 great-nephews and nieces, 21 great-great-nephews and nieces; and one great-great-great-nephew.

The funeral will begin 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Hagan-Chamberlain Funeral Home, 225 Mountain Ave., Bound Brook, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Church. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bridgewater.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Haiti Mission Ministry, St. Thomas Aquinas Center, Purdue University, 535 W. State Street, Lafayette, IN 47906.

Mr. Fiadino is remembered by his family and friends in the words of Sacred Scripture, from the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25:14-29, "His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant.' "
