Rick's Cycle Center

How many of you remember Rick's Cycle Center? I can remember it from when it started out on East Street. Rick became one of the first Triump Dealers in the area back then. During the 60's Rick Solderberg moved his MotorCycle business over to the corner of Drake and Main Street in the old building that prior to Rick taking it over housed the BB Poultry Shop. There Rick brought in other makes and models of Motorcycle's being one of the first dealers to bring in the Kawasaki MotorCycle line. Most of us kids back then thought they were Polish MotorCycles. I remember pronoucing then as Ka-wal-ski's as a kid at first. Rick eventually moved across the street building a brand new building on Main Street that once housed the Newtex Corporation that burned to the ground years before. Anyway I am sure others who knew the shop well will have something to say here eventually.

Rick was a real piece of work. I remember him leaving the Bound Brook Diner and winding up full throttle through the underpass and over the Queens bridge. He also had an early Corvette (54/55) with a Buick V8 under the hood. Used to race a lot of nights on the 1/4 mile bridge on #287.

I remember when Ricky's shop (on the corner)was under water(the first time). Chris Mastrup and Rick were friends of my dad. I called them UNCLE. They let me work in the shop. All the leathers and helmets had a nasty stench, but we sold all that we could. The water line went half up the wall. Lots of stuff was floating. The bikes all had to be drained, flushed and started. I couldn't let my Grandmother know I was working there (she thought I was working at the dress store). I worked on a Purple Triumph.
We called it "The Easter Bunny Bike". I was the only teenage girl in the shop. I had so much fun.

I ran into Rick Rizzon from Rizzons Cycle center of Middlesex, N.J. just the other day. For those not in the know here on this forum Rick Rizzon was one of Rick Solderburgs motorcycyle mechanics back in the day at Ricks Cycle Center on Main Street of Bound Brook. smile

My Dad always had a motorcycle.  He grew up in Somerville.  Dad was enamored with the British bikes back then.  So it made sense that he became friends with Rick!  Below is a '67 Triumph Bonneville 550 (bored out to 650cc) that my dad bought from Rick.  That's my brother and I sitting on it probably @ 1969 in our backyard in Plainfield.   My brother and I still have the bike and are looking forward to getting it restored!   I remember when Rick's shop in Bound Brook was flooded in the early 70's.  That was some wild flood.
