Rutgers: is suddenly in the market for a new head football coach.
Greg Schiano, who returned Rutgers to respectability but never delivered the championships he repeatedly promised during his 11 years on the job, has abruptly left the school — at the height of recruiting — to become the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to a person familiar with the situation.
Schiano agreed to a five-year deal with the Buccaneers, said the person, who requested anonymity because they not authorized to speak for Schiano or the Buccaneers.
"He will make what first-year NFL coaches in his situation typically make, which between $2.8 and $3.8 million per year," an NFL official who requested anonymity told The Star-Ledger.
Schiano's contract with Rutgers, which paid him approximately $2.3 million per year, had five seasons left on it.
Schiano met with Rutgers players and coaches at the Hale Center at 3 p.m. to relate his decision. At the meeting, which lasted about 25 minutes, it was announced that Kyle Flood, the offensive line and assistant head coach under Schiano, would be named Rutgers' interim head coach.
How many of you think Schiano will make Tampa Bay into a team with Super Bowl Contention? I just don't see it. All one has to do is to look at his time at Rutgers.
