Congress Takes Major Step Towards Nationwide E-Verify

Chris ChmielenskiFor several years, NumbersUSA has been pushing for the state-level passage of mandatory E-Verify legislation. Our a activists have helped pass great legislation in Arizona, Mississippi, South Carolina, and states like Alabama and Georgia.

And this year, we had a major E-Verify victory in in the Supreme Court.

The goal has always been to force the large business groups, who have blocked national E-Verify for 15 years -- and this year alone killed bills in Utah, Florida, and Texas -- to push for national legislation.

This week our goal became a reality with the introduction of the Legal Workforce Act by House Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith. The bill requires 99% of all businesses in the United States to use E-Verify within 2 years and reinstates the no-match program and other triggers that will help identify the 8 million illegal aliens currently in the workforce.

Since the bill was announced, you've sent 141,519 faxes to Congress urging passage of the bill! (For full details of the bill, and Roy's analysis, click here)

The faxing campaign is part of our 4 Steps to End Illegal Alien Hiring, which includes:

  • Send 1,000,000 faxes to Congress, urging passage of a nationwide mandatory E-Verify bill.
  • Free phone calls to Congress. Next week we'll provide toll-free numbers for you to call your Members of Congress.
  • LIVE Webcast where we answer your questions about Chairman Smith's bill. You can submit your questions through email (stateaction2011@numbersusa.com) or through Facebook and Twitterbefore and during the webcast.
  • Local visits to Members of Congress. As the bill begins to move through Congress, our LEAP team will be coordinating local office visits for key Members of Congress.

Passing E-Verify is imperative to opening up millions of jobs for 22 million Americans who can't find a full-time job. Please help us pass this great piece of legislation!

Thanks,
Chris Chmielenski
