Does anyone remember Jay's Hobbie Shop on Talmage Ave pretty much right across the street from The Brass Rail? Whenever we went in there, when it was open, the selves were always just about bear. I can't remeber who owned it but I think it was a Bueno. I remember that it didn't last very long but it was part of Bound Brook for a short while
Zach, I remember the name as I heard it mentioned plenty of times as a kid from the older kids. My guess they were around during the very late 50's to early 60's between maybe 58'-65'. Maybe you can enlighten us a little more about it. I am pretty sure I was even inside the place with someone taking me there. The name Jay's Hobbie Shop sure rings a bell right away in my mind.

Don't remember that one, I do remember the one next to the Brook Theater. It had a dragstrip and a road race coures for slot cars.

The one next to the Brook Theater was the Brook Hobby shop. I used to buy all my models there. Just offloaded a bunch of these models a few years ago. Tired of carrying them around for 35 plus years. The owners of the hobby shop were the Storys. Ralph and his wife.
Hey I still have my Chaparral as I found it up in my parents attic. I use to race that car on the track at the Brooks Hobby Shop and up at Tiny Tots in Green Brook.

I also remember the one by the theatre..though i was not very good at it I can remember the slot car track..The one on talmage ave. I do think was one of the Bueno's. Even though I don't really remember it I do remember going to the buthcher shop with my Dad and buying basbeball gloves etc from Jimmy. So I think he did have the hobby/sports store.

Zach, I emailed my godfather from confirmation Anthony Spasiano the other day about Jay's Hobby Shop as I know he spent plenty of time there. As a kid living in the West End during the 50's when I heard Anthony fire up one of his many models of airplanes in his driveway I couldn't get out of the house fast enough to go over and see what was going on in amazement. Later on as I grew older I played with the gas power models myself but nothing close to what Spaz got involved with. He build plenty of his own planes out of Balsa wood kits and he built some really big planes I remember. Anyway here's a quote from Anthony's email to me. Quote: (I think Jay's last name was Leotti, but I'm not sure. Jay's was a great place for me. I spent a lot of time and money there. I can't remember when it opened, but I believe it closed in the late fifty's or early sixty's. Bobby Armenti,Mike Mente and I bought a lot of model airplanes there.) End Quote:
Myself I have to say playing around even with the smaller planes with those gas powered motors back in the day I am surprised none of us lost any fingers turning the props to start the engines on these planes. Many a time you didn't get your hand out of the way in time and man did that hurt as some of us had cut up fingers. Funny I never see these planes advertised anymore. I would guess they are considered a dangerous toy for kids today being that a moving propellar could really do some damage to someone no matter how old you are.
