LaMonte Field

Since we do have some old-timers on the forum, does anyone remember and have any memories of the old LaMonte Field?
The one that had the 1/4 mile cinder track and the baseball backstop that was about 40 feet behind homeplate. The old clubhouse where the attic smelled like the dead because everyone put their sweaty football practice uniforms up there to dry.
I spent half of my teen life on that field either watching games, coaching, umpiring, or playing baseball and football games on it. Some really good times with some really good friends

Thanks for the reminder, that field has many memories for me also.

During one track meet our baseball coach Mr. DeGhetti, god rest his soul, refused to stop practice.  When our centerfielder Mike Gubitoso accidentally bumped into a sophomore BB runner who was leading the pack in a 3-mile race, the runner threw off his spikes and stormed off the field.  The runner was Matt Leddy who held BB cross-country records for many years and went on to be an all-stater for Delbarton before a collegiate career at Allegheny College and UCLA.

The right field fence of the baseball field was about 200 feet from homeplate down the line so you could get a homerun by hitting a pop fly. Pull hitting lefties did really well on that field. In the mid-70s it was the Corsini brothers, first Artie and then Rob who batted 2nd in the BBHS lineup and swatted the ball over that short porch in right.

The infield at shortstop was the middle of the endzone for the football field.  There were potholes from football season that were filled with sand before baseball season but still created some pretty strange hops that wreaked havoc for visiting shortstops.

I was once the batboy for the BB Senior League baseball team and had fun chasing foul balls in the woods down the right field line.  There was a little creek down there between the field and the houses which is now underground but pops up again over by the old Crusader Luncheonette/current Lawnmower Shop, crossing under Union Avenue and along the old Apgar's/current bank and spilling into Vosseler Brook.  If you find any old baseballs in the creek they're mine!

If you go back to 1967 and look on the street right in front of the gate, main entrance to field there was a big peace sign painted with spray paint on the road. Not saying I know anything about how it got there...... But it was still there when I graduated in 1970....lol
