I don't remember the fire but I do remember Archie's, right across the street from LuZan's. I couldn't understand how two men stores could survive fo so long, so close to each other in such a small town, but they did.
They survived because there was variety. Archie's was a little more high end clothing lines, pricier, carried Botany 500 suits etc. Luzan's was more working guy pricing and yet nice clothes. I shopped at both. The guys at Archies, Herb, Abe, Mel, and Tony were good to deal with. They always gave my mom a break at the checkout register!
Don't remember the Archies fire but I remember the fire at Wahl's. Archies and Wahls were the same family. Wahl's burned along with Hoagland's and pretty much wiped out the half block from where Kurtz's is still to where the one the gogo bars is. I think Berman's paints was there at the time also and that is what helped that become a spectacular fire.
I also used to go down there to buy my cub scout stuff. My father bought all his suits from them (as far back as I can remember anyway) and I bought my first suits and ties when I graduated college back in 94. I also grew up with Mel's and Herb's daughters so it was kind of neat (as a kid) to know someone who owned a store downtown. I don't remember a Tony or Abe, though.
No one has mentioned Archie's. Mel and Herb. My son started his retail career there. They were the supplier of the outfits the men from the BB Elks wore for their parade in Wildwood. I remember Mel, Herb, Bob Bendler and my son Mark.

Actually there is a thread started about Archies Mens Shop back in August of 2008 so I decided to merge CMollster37's thread into it. There are over 4 pages of threads on different topics in the Yesterdays Bound Brook Section of this forum. So many that the poster probably missed seeing it there. No big deal as they are now one.
