Castelli's Grocery and Deli Store


You would definitely need to go back to the 50's and early 60's to remember Castelli's Grocery and Deli Store located on Main St. right across the street from the old Ricks Cycle Center and near the corner of Church Street. Right now there is an upholstery store in its place. Castelli's was one of those neighborhood stores where you could pick up a loaf of American Bread and some Cold Cuts back in the day. I remember going in there for a quarters worth of Baloney and a loaf of Wonder Bread. My Grandmother always would shop there as it was in walking distance. Although I am Italian I really had a liking for that very spicy Polish (Kosciusko) mustard. That and a Baloney or Ham sandwich actually made the sandwich just right. Some will remember Kosciusko's brown mustard being sold in a MUG type of glass in the supermarket. You actually had a nice MUG for drinking when you were done with the mustard. That in itself must of helped sell more of their Spicey Mustard. Til today I still use Kosciusko's brand of mustard. Nothing comes close. Guldens is close but it doesn't cut the mustard. No pun intended. biggrin

Hey Stone,

      I remember Castelli's well.  My grandmother sent me there to buy little things she may have forgotten or needed on the quick.  She sent me for "datalene" one day and I had no clue she needed ditalini pasta !  If I am not mistaken, didn't Calabrese open the store in that location years later??

I also enjoyed the kosciusko mustard.  It was the best in my book too.  Some of Eddie's boiled ham on toast with that mustard...Ummmmmmmmm!

Joesdad I don't remember who might of taken over if someone did but I do remember who turned me on to Kosciusko Mustard and that was your relatives that lived above you. Marge made plenty of boiled ham sandwiches using Kosciusko Mustard. I remember Dave and I eating them after swimming at the Park Pool.

Oh yes, Marge could whip up some good stuff.  She was actually Slovak.  She could make great italian as well as Polish and Slovak dishes.  Her Kielbasa with the special sauce was killer.
