The Big W Supermarket

How many of you remember the Big W Supermarket on Hamilton Street? It used to also be called Food Town at one point and a few other names that I can't think of right now.  I use to work their during the 60's while in High School. If you lived in the West End most usually did their food shopping at this supermarket. I remember this place like yesterday. I use to work in produce weighing vegetables and fruit for people as they brought them up to me in their brown bags. I also worked in Grocery at some point. That was a tougher job for a High School Student especially when the Tractor Trailers came in and had to be unloaded by hand and the boxes rolled down the roller assembly they used at this establishment. Being in those trailers on a Summer Day was no picnic let me tell you. Most know what it is like to be in a Sauna. Picture working hard moving heavy boxes in those conditions. hmm

I knew Harry well (joesdad). Harry passed away some years ago. He must of started at the Big W after I had left the place. I worked there from '68-through early '69 then took a part time job at Baker and Taylor working from 4pm-11pm in my senior year. When I think about it now I have to shake my head to be working those hours because I barely got enough sleep let alone have any time to do homework but I had to have a nice car. I guess some things never change. biggrin

We knew Harry at our house too as he used to come visit my cousin.  I graduated with his former wife!  As for working and wanting a nicer car, some things don't change.  We car people are always chasing something!!

Forget Me Not - thanks

I remember Christmas of 1968 - the blizzard. I walked to Johannsens Bakery for bread for Christmas Eve dinner (the polish celebration).

All of sudden there was an amazing streak of lightning and thunder (thundersnow I guess).

Most people stopped in silence and were scared.

I guess they thought the Commies had nuked New York City.
